The primary purpose of reference services at the USF Tampa Library is to support the research and instructional success of USF faculty and students. In addition, our reference services support the informational needs of non-USF scholars, USF staff, USF alumni, and members of the local community.
We believe that reference services include helping patrons to become more aware of library services and resources; to identify and focus their informational need; and to locate, evaluate, and use relevant information.
We believe that our reference services should be available to our patrons whenever and wherever they are needed, within the practical limitations of our resources. This means that we design and implement services that provide physical forms of reference whenever the USF Tampa Library is open to patrons, and virtual forms of reference 24/7.
We believe that our reference services and our instructional services should be integrated in such a way that our patrons, especially USF students, are assisted with becoming more self-sufficient in their research activities. This also means that we design, create, and publish instructional materials that address common reference questions.
We believe that reference services should be offered via a wide variety of communication methods as needed by patrons: face-to-face, phone, and virtual technologies (including our website, the USF portal, Blackboard, and social media).
