Make an Appointment
Appointments can be made with staff only for assistance with supported software and equipment. Appointments cannot be made for:
- Staff creation or completion of user’s projects (we will not do the projects for you)
- Soliciting artistic or graphic design suggestions (we will not interfere in your creative process)
- Microsoft Word, Excel or other common programs where training is available elsewhere (we have IT support on the 1st floor)
Students must sign in at the DMC Service Desk when entering the Digital Media Commons. All students must list their name, USF U number and a brief description of the multimedia project they are working on before being assigned a workstation.
Workstations are open on a first-come first-serve basis unless a class is scheduled. Workstations will be open for a maximum of two-hour blocks (if other students are on waiting list for a workstation). Space permitting, students can sign up for another hour by hour reservation.
Food and Drink
Drinks with lids are permitted, but food is not permitted. Please do not leave trash behind. Recycling bins are next to the elevators on each floor.
Storage and Saving Work
Work-in-progress files may be stored on the workstation’s internal hard drive for the duration of the session, but users are encouraged to save their work to a removable media at the end of the session and remove all files from the internal drive. All files/work left on workstations are public, therefore their integrity and existence is not guaranteed. A limited number of 1TB external drives are kept for storing work. These are accessible to all and are not considered a safe or private area to store files. Use these at your own risk.
The internal drives are regularly erased.
Users should bring USB flash drives, portable hard drives, DVDs, or be prepared to send files over the network for storage. Files may be deleted from the workstation’s hard drive at any time after the completion of The Digital Media Commons and its staff are not liable for any loss, damage or expense sustained by any user due to the use of the library services, equipment, software, advice or information.
Be Courteous to Others
Students may work on stations in small groups. Those working in groups should keep their volume low out of respect for others. Failure to do so may result in being asked to leave.
The computer stations in the Digital Media Commons are designed for collaboration. Extra chairs are available, however, due to space restrictions there can only be a maximum of three people at any computer station.
Please keep headphone volume as low as possible. We have a limited number of headphones with microphones available for use. Headphones must remain in the Digital Media Commons.
Be Careful With Equipment
Digital Media Commons equipment is USF property. Users of equipment will be held responsible to pay the replacement cost of any borrowed equipment, which is lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair. These costs will be applied against the user’s USF account and must be paid online.
- Users may not check out equipment if their Library account is blocked due to fines or overdue items.
- Users are responsible for returning all equipment in the same condition as it was when checked out. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the equipment is in proper working order when checking it out. Should the user discover equipment is faulty for any reason, it must be reported immediately.
- Equipment returned to the Digital Media Commons must be handed directly to a student employee or staff member.
- Equipment usage privileges may be revoked at any time without warning due to careless handling of equipment, repeated lateness, or repetitive damage. Please note that unattended equipment is considered careless handling.
- Please do not leave personal items or other Library materials unattended. Please do not leave workstations unattended while using computers and equipment.
Ask For Assistance
Technical assistance with hardware and software problems is available at the student desk during DMC service hours. If working outside the library, you can always call desk at (813) 974-1217.
Assistance is available during specified hours and can provide you with instruction in basic operation of software, suggest media appropriate for a particular assignment, and refer students to additional resources such as manuals, and online tutorials.
When possible we will answer all questions immediately, but in depth questions may require an appointment. You can request a 45 minute session with a consultant by filling out the request form online or by calling the desk.
Please note, we will not do your project for you; we will only assist in training on equipment and software.
