October is American Archives Month

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013 | Posted in Collections, Faculty, News, Resources, Services, Students by Tomaro Taylor | No Comments »

“What’s an archive?” you say?  Visit the FMHI Research Library to find out.  You can also learn about our archival research collections by visiting: http://lib.usf.edu/fmhi/archives/historical-records-papers/.  (Additional collections are available at the USF Tampa Library Special Collections).

How can archives benefit your research?

  • Archives provide records of activity, which can be used to understand the functions, purpose,  interests, and goals of organizations and individuals.
  • Archival records can be current or non-current, which  allows researchers to better understand the context within which certain activities occur.
  • In addition to printed or textual  information, archives can include images, audio recordings and visual materials  – a wide-range of items that can support and complement your research from various angles.

What are some of the FMHI Library’s archival collections?
(If you don’t know what a finding aid is, click it to find out! Or, here’s a hint – a finding aid is a detailed description of a collection’s contents.)

  • Colleen Lunsford Bevis collection >> finding aid
  • Dr. Charles S. Mahan papers (currently, only select materials are available for research use)
  • Florida Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse papers  >> finding aid
  • Florida Study Commission on Child Welfare papers >> finding aid
  • JCAHO Papers on the Accreditation of FMHI >> finding aid
  • National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality papers
  • Joseph B. Sidowski research materials >> finding aid
  • David C. Speer research materials
  • SEDNET: Multiagency Service Network for Severely Emotionally Disabled Students >> finding aid

How do I use the FMHI Library’s archival research collections?
All researchers are asked to read this page first and this page second.

One Person Can Make a Difference: Henrietta Lacks

Monday, August 12th, 2013 | Posted in Collections, Faculty, News, Resources, Services, Students by Tomaro Taylor | No Comments »

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks has been selected for this year’s Common Reading Experience at the University of South Florida. The USF Libraries have purchased multiple copies of the book, authored by Rebecca Skloot, which are available to FMHI Research Library patrons via the USF Libraries catalogue online, through InterLibrary Loan, or by visiting the Tampa Library.

In addition to the text, USF Librarians have created a reseach guide to accompany the Common Read: http://guides.lib.usf.edu/CRE.  The guide includes a list of  supplementary resources, including links to documentaries and radio interviews. The guide also includes a brief list of discussion questions and curricula topics that can be used in class.

The following is a list of resources available at or through the FMHI Research Library to suppport and facilitate discussions centered on The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.  For more information about theses resources or for assistance using them, contact the librarians.

“Few Students Likely to Use Print Books for Research”

Monday, August 5th, 2013 | Posted in Faculty, News, Services, Workshops by Tomaro Taylor | No Comments »

A 2012 report recently published by the Pew Research Center indicates that only 12% of surveyed  middle- and high-school teachers said their students “were ‘very likely’ to use printed books in a typical research assignment.” Of those surveyed, only 16% of teachers said that their students would be “very likely” to seek assistance from research librarians.

Students carry these habits into their college careers and beyond.  If they’re not navigating the stacks, just what are they navigating?  Let’s find out!  Schedule a librarian-led session to help your students learn to search library resources effectively.  C ontact Claudia Dold for more information, or sign up for a session using the online form.
