Call for chapter contributions:

Diagnosing Folklore: Perspectives on Health, Trauma, and Disability,  Edited by: Trevor J. Blank and Andrea Kitta

The editors welcome submissions that thematically address the following from a folkloristic perspective:

– Stigma and/or public perceptions about mental health/ illness, trauma, and disability
– Narratives about mental health/ illness, trauma, and/or disability
– Folkloric explanations for mental health/ illness, trauma, and/or disability (including beliefs)
– Tellability and untellability
– Non-narrativity
– Stigmatized vernacular
– The intersection of embodiment with mental health/ illness, trauma, and disability
– Bodylore as it relates to wellness, mental health/ illness, trauma, and disability
– Traditions of disbelief seen as “mental illness”
– Folk medicine as it relates to the themes of mental health/ illness, trauma, and disability
– “Best” medical practices (as they correlate to folk knowledge)
– Unofficial knowledge vs. official knowledge
– Fieldwork best practices, auto-ethnography, reciprocal ethnography pertaining to mental health/ illness, trauma, and disability

The editors of the volume are in discussion with the University Press of Mississippi regarding publication and will be sharing selected contributors’ abstracts with the editor-in-chief of the press. Those interested in contributing to “Diagnosing Folklore” should submit a tentative chapter title and 400-word abstract to Trevor J. Blank via email at blanktj@potsdam.edu by no later than Monday, September 2, 2013. Selected authors will be notified of their acceptance by October 1, 2013. Initial chapter drafts of approximately 6,000 to 10,000 words will be due in June 2014.


Call for Proposals: Sessions, Panels, Papers (2014 Popular Culture PCA/ACA Conference, April 16-April 19, Chicago, IL)

Welcome to one of the newest and hopefully one of the most stimulating and provocative Areas of the Popular Culture Association. Throughout recorded history, those regarded as mentally ill have frightened, fascinated and challenged us to look deep within the human experience for answers to the most fundamental of questions about ourselves and each other. It has only been within the recent past that Mental Health/Illness and Popular Culture Studies have come together in attempts to answer some of these age-old questions.

Please consider submitting a 150-250 word abstract through the online database on a topic that intersects mental health, mental illness and popular culture. The Deadline is 11/30/2013. Suggested topics include:

Depictions of mental health and mental illness in

  •   Movies, television or animation
  •   Literature, comics or graphic novels
  •   Music and musicals
  •   Advertising
  •   Sports
  •   Religion
  •   Media representations of psychotherapy, counseling or psychiatry

“Leadership, Equity, and Social Justice in American Higher Education Essays for Academic and Student Affairs Professionals From The Field”

The purpose and aim of this volume is to “critique” the current state of American Higher Education through the lens of critical theory and critical pedagogy. Since the Great Recession of 2007 we have witnessed dramatic cuts in state funding to public universities, a significant increase in student loan debt because of ever increasing tuition, challenges to academic freedom and tenure for faculty, issues regarding access and equity to higher education by undocumented students and those in poverty, and the corporatization of higher education. Issues regarding leadership and shared governance of institutions continue to play out in the media and technology continues to impact how the curriculum is delivered. This volume seeks to impact higher education preparation programs by filling the void in the literature with voices from the field.

Proposed sections and topics include but are not limited to the following:
