Clendinen Virtual Reading Room
Welcome to the Clendinen Virtual Reading Room, named in honor of the late James A. Clendinen, former editor of the "Tampa Tribune." The Clendinen Virtual Reading Room contains links to mass communications-related web sites, accessible to all visitors, as well as databases to which the USF Libraries subscribe, and which are available only to University of South Florida faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students. The Virtual Reading Room was created and is maintained by the USF Libraries as a resource center for the USF School of Mass Communications. It serves as a complement to the physical reading room (pictured here) located in the Communication and Information Sciences building on the USF Tampa Campus.
James A. Clendinen served the "Tampa Tribune" for 50 years, including 25 years as editor and more than a decade as editorial board chairman. During the time he chaired the editorial board, Clendinen won a dozen first-place awards for editorial writing from the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors. After he died in 1991, his employer, friends and family endowed the Clendinen Professorship at the USF School of Mass Communications and provided the funds to establish the Clendinen Library and Virtual Reading Room at the USF Tampa Campus.
The Virtual Reading Room underwent a facelift in 2007, along with other areas of the USF Libraries web site. Use the menu at right to navigate through the various pages. In order to view databases that have restricted access, USF students, faculty and staff viewing this site from off-campus should login, if they have not already, at www.lib.usf.edu/public/index.cfm
NOTE: Users of the Internet Explorer or Safari Internet browsers may experience difficulty in accessing databases through the Clendinen Virtual Reading Room site. These browsers sometimes will report a database URL does not exist. The Firefox browser will work properly and is recommended if there are problems. Download Firefox at www.mozilla.com/en-US/
