Florida Sheet Music Collection

Performing arts resources include manuscript and printed materials, such as plays, prompt books, scene and stage directions, scores, hymnals, and music research collections.

Theatre Collections


The Dion Boucicault Theatre Collection

Dates: ca.1843 - 1880
Extent: 19.5 linear ft (24 boxes)

Description: Dion Boucicault (1820-1890) was a prolific and innovative playwright, actor , producer, manager and director of the nineteenth-century, English-speaking stage. By his own account, Boucicault wrote, directed and acted in 250 plays, many of which were wildly popular in Ireland, England, Australia and the Unites States. A virtuoso at pleasing audiences, Boucicault developed many of the conventions of melodrama that shaped American drama for generations. He not only influenced the practices and conventions of his contemporaries but also brought important social and cultural issues of historical significance- such as race, political and economic issues- to the stage. The Dion Boucicault Theatre Collection primarily contains manuscript and printed plays. The collection consists of approximately 781 items, including printed and manuscript play scripts, sides, stage directions, letters, and musical scores. The collection also includes set design sketches, prompt books, photographs and select musical segments.

Music Collections



Ben Brown Bluegrass Collections

Description
: Donated by USF student Ben Brown, this collection consists of eleven 10 1/2 inch reels of 1/2 inch magnetic audio tape containing music recorded live at the White Springs Bluegrass Festival (White Springs, Florida) May 4 - 6, 1972. These tapes were the basis for a record album produced by Ben Brown and released by Kaloosa Records (Tampa, Florida) later that year. Four copies of the album are included as part of the collection.



Carpenter Sheet Music

Dates: 1864 - 1951
Extent:
3 linear feet (2 boxes)

Description:
Donated by Ted and Susan Carpenter in 2003, this collection is comprised of over 400 pieces of primarily late nineteenth-century American sheet music.



Florida Sheet Music Collection

Dates: late nineteenth century - early twentieth century
Extent:
9 linear feet (10 boxes)

Description:
Comprised of nearly 250 titles highlighting Florida themes, composer and publishers, the Florida Sheet Music Collection is significant to researchers of both music and art alike.



Robert Helps Collection

Dates: 1900 - 2001a
Extent:
24 liner feet (44 boxes)

Description:
Primarily consisting of manuscript and printed scores composed by Robert Helps between the early 1950s and 2001, this collection also includes performance programs, performance reviews and professional and personal correspondence. A sizeable collection of Helps' musical recordings currently is being processed.



Theodore Hoffman Collection of Modern Japanese Music

Dates: 1985 - 2001
Extent:
12 linear feet (20 boxes)

Description:
The Hoffman Collection of Modern Japanese Music consists of more than 300 music scores issued by the Japan Federation of Composers. The collection also contains records (LPs), books and related materials.



LoCicero Sicilian Phonograph Records

Dates: 1906 - 1951
Extent:
3 linear feet (4 boxes)

Description:
A sizeable collection of early twentieth-century Sicilian phonograph records.



NationsBank African American Musical Heritage Collection

1818 - late 1980s
Extent:
54 linear feet (35 boxes)

Description: The Nationsbank African American Musical Heritage Collection consists of approximately 4000 pieces of published sheet music reflecting the influences of African Americans on popular music in the United States. The music was created, performed, or published by African Americans or portrays African American themes throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the United States. The collection chronicles the evolution of African American inspired American music for a period of nearly 200 years and includes such items as music books, manuscript music, photographs, posters, handbills and other ephemera related to the collection of sheet music. This Nationsbank African American Musical Heritage Collection is useful to researchers, musicologists, sociologists, historians and visual artists. The illustrated covers and lyrics illuminate racial and cultural attitudes of previous generations. The collection was acquired in 1988 from a Michigan music store and made possible by a generous donation on behalf of Nationsbank (Bank of America).

Suchoff Collection of Bartokiana

45 linear feet (57 boxes)

Description:
The Benjamin Suchoff Collection of Bartokiana consists of works (such as concertos, folk music and sonatas) by Bela Bartok as well as research materials gathered by Benjamin Suchoff. A small portion of the collection includes items about the New York Bartok Archives and materials created and collected by Elliot Antokoletz.
