Latin American, Caribbean, and Spanish Language Collections

Latin American, Caribbean, and Spanish Language CollectionsThe Latin American, Caribbean, and Spanish Language Collections include a number of archival collections documenting the Latin American and Caribbean heritage of Tampa’s Ybor City and West Tampa communities. Primary source materials from the Centro Asturiano de Tampa (finding aid), the Centro Español de Tampa (finding aid), Tampa’s Afro-Cuban Society, and the Union Martí-Maceo (finding aid) comprise a significant portion of the department’s Latin American, Caribbean, and Spanish-language collections.

In addition to archival collections, Special Collections maintains two separate monographic collections that focus on the literature, politics and socio-cultural history of Latin America and the Caribbean, with particular emphasis on Bolivia, Cuba, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The Latin American and Cuban collections primarily consist of 20th century, Spanish-language monographs and include cultural studies and political and social histories, novels, and works of poetry; the growing collection of publications is a highlight. These collections also include a small selection of serial and governmental publications, including a multi-volume set of Cuba’s Colección Legislativa, beginning in 1899; and monographs directly related to or with a strong focus on Florida, especially Tampa.
