From first-year students to those preparing for graduate school testing, learning support courses are available to help you assess yourself as a learner and develop a wide range of strategies to improve study skills, time management, reading strategies, and writing skills. Courses available include:
- REA 2604 Strategic Learning (1 credit)
- REA 1605 Advance Learning Systems (2 credits)
- REA 2105 Critical Reading and Writing (3 credits Gordon Rule)
- REA 1205 Advanced Reading (3 credits)
- ENC 1130 Improving College Writing (3 credits)

This 1-credit course is available on the Alternative Calendar*. It is designed to assist students with the development of effective intellectual and academic strategies to enhance success both in college and as well as for lifelong learning. Through the process of reflective practice, students have the opportunity to develop an understanding of themselves as learners, and then to intentionally apply that understanding to the development of the most effective strategies for success in both college learning and beyond. The focus of the course is on the most immediate academic needs.
This 2-credit course is based on a model of developing self-regulated learners through understanding motivation, attitude, goal planning, and the process of knowledge acquisition. The content centers on the belief that learning is an individualized and interactive process. Students learn to approach knowledge based on their personal metacognitive response to learning and develop processes of acquiring knowledge that are personally meaningful. Through the process of reflective practice, students will have the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of themselves as learners, and then intentionally apply that understanding to the development of the most effective strategies for success in both college learning and beyond, through the application of a learning systems approach. This includes exploration of a variety of strategies and methods for to apply immediately for both academic and personal improvement. The course is intended to help students generalize their approach beyond the walls of formal schooling in order to become autonomous lifelong learners.
The key dimensions of this 3-credit, Gordon Rule course are aimed at engaging students in the fundamentals of critical literacy through critical reading, reflective analysis, and effective analytical writing. It achieves this goal by utilizing multiple sources across various disciplines. These key intellectual strategies are thoroughly explored in the course to teach students how to grasp the expansive and interdisciplinary nature of academic information. The course will use a strategic reflective model of knowledge acquisition and students will have multiple opportunities to engage in active learning. The course meets the criteria for Gordon Rule writing requirements.
This 3-credit course focuses on developing a broad array of intellectual strategies that are needed for understanding college-level academic material. The course addresses several important dimensions, such as enhancing critical reading skills, improving reading comprehension, increasing vocabulary knowledge, and improving reading rate. The course will use a strategic-reflective reading model to provide students with the opportunity to augment their critical thinking ability to grasp the expansive and interdisciplinary nature of academic information.
This 3-credit course approaches writing as a process and utilizes prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Through intensive reading and writing practice, the curriculum will address grammar, mechanics, punctuation, word usage, and essay structure.
