    Students in all disciplines and at any level of study can engage in undergraduate research. Whether you are a freshman, a transfer student, or at the end of your Baccalaureate program there are many research opportunities available at USF. You should begin your search for a research position by answering the guiding questions listed below. Answering these questions will help you determine why you want to engage in research and what you expect to gain from the experience.

    How do I register for an OUR workshop?

    Click the RSVP link next to the workshop date on the workshop schedule.

    Will I receive a registration confirmation when I register for a workshop?

    Yes. After you register for a workshop a thank you confirmation page will appear on the screen. You may print this page for your records. You will also receive an e-mail reminder several days prior to the workshop.

    I want to register for a workshop but it is full. Can I attend anyway?

    Yes. A few seats are usually reserved for walk-in attendees. Please call the OUR prior to the workshop to confirm that walk-in seating is available.

    Where are OUR workshops held?

    All OUR workshops are held in the Office for Undergraduate Research, LIB 210.

    Do I need to bring anything to the Getting Started workshop?

    Yes. You should bring the Self-Assessment and I will documents to the workshop.

    Does the OUR offer workshops for help with poster and oral presentations?

    Yes. Presentation preparation workshops are offered each spring prior to the Undergraduate Research Colloquium.

    Does the OUR offer workshops on topics other than how to get started in research?

    Yes. The OUR hosts the Professional Development workshops series during the fall and spring semesters. Topics include demystifying graduate school, writing for success, identifying summer research opportunities, and networking at professional conferences.

    I would like to help out with OUR events. Can I volunteer with the OUR?

    Yes. As an OUR volunteer you will help spread the word about the advantages of undergraduate research at USF. Opportunities include assisting at the annual Research Colloquium and other OUR sponsored events.

    I want to participate in summer research. Does the OUR provide information regarding summer opportunities?

    Yes. Information regarding summer opportunities both on and off campus may be found here (link to external, internal opps). In addition, each fall, the OUR offers a workshop on the topic of summer research opportunities. Learn more here:

    Can first year students participate in undergraduate research?

    Yes. There are a variety of ways that first year students may engage in undergraduate research. To learn more, attend a Getting Started in Undergraduate Research workshop.

    Is it important that the research project is in my discipline?

    No. Any project, issue or question that you care about can potentially be developed into a viable research project.
