Lavallée-Welch attends the Leadership Summit of SLA

At the beginning of February, USF in Lakeland Library Director Catherine Lavallée-Welch attended the Leadership Summit of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in Dallas. The Summit is the occasion for the association’s unit leaders to conduct some association business and develop leadership skills. A new strategic agenda for the association was presented.

Lavallée-Welch also led the Board meeting of the Academic Division of SLA, of which she is Chair.

A visit was organized to the Sixth Floor Museum at Daley Plaza, which included an interesting tour of its Reading Room which gives access to the Museum’s primary and secondary materials about the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Fulkerson appointed to important national task force on information literacy

Diane Fulkerson, Social Sciences & Education Librarian, has officially been appointed to the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education Task Force, of the Association for College & Research Library (ACRL.)

Created by Steven Bell, president of ACRL, this important task force will revise the Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. The current standards will be rescinded and new standards will be developed to reflect learning in the 21st century with the diverse sources of information available to students.

Diane is the current Chair of the ACRL Information Literacy Standards Committee. Among other things, this committee creates subject specific information literacy standards.

Diane Fulkerson attends ALA MidWinter conference

Diane Fulkerson, Social Sciences & Education Librarian at USF in Lakeland, attended the MidWinter conference of the American Library Association (ALA).

IGI-Global asked Diane to do a presentation at their booth on Saturday to discuss her current research that focuses on mobile technologies and social media.

She was also busy in governance, attending meetings from the ACRL Leadership Council, the Student Information Literacy Coordinating Committee and the Information Literacy Component Committee, of which Diane is chair. She also attended Caroline Kennedy’s keynote presentation about the importance of libraries.

Farewell to Catherine Lavallée-Welch

Catherine Lavallée-Welch, Director of the USF in Lakeland Library, has accepted a new position.
May 1st, she will become the Director of the Murphy Library at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.

Catherine has been at USF on the Lakeland campus , in its three latest embodiments, since 2005. She was the first USF librarian on campus, created and offered all library services, and opened the first USF library in 2007. She was also a very active member in governance and service, at USF and in professional associations. She was promoted to the rank of University Librarian in July 2012.

Her last day is April 25th.

UW-L has an FTE of 11,000 and is consistently ranked by Kiplinger’s and U.S. News & World Report as one of the top public comprehensive universities in the country.

Our writing tutor, Floydd Elliott, has a new office and new hours this semester.

LTB 1117 (still inside the Library)

Tuesday: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Wednesday: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Thursday: 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Floydd assists students with reviewing papers, brainstorming ideas, and making suggestions for improvements. He meets with students on a walk-in basis but is also able to schedule appointments during his scheduled hours. His email address is mre@usf.edu.

Social Sciences & Education Librarian Diane Fulkerson recently sat on a panel at the 2012 Charleston Conference, in Charleston, SC.

Publisher IGI Global, who published Diane’s book, Remote Access Technologies for Library Collections: Tools for Library Users and Managers, invited her to present on a panel entitled “It’s All About Connections: Utilizing Webinars and Online Learning to Enhance Education.” The co-presenters were Daniel Freeman from ALA TechSource and Lisa Carlucci Thomas, of Design Think Do and the moderator was Saeed Otufat-Shamsi of IGI Global.

USF in Lakeland Business Librarian Lisa Zilinski has submitted her resignation to accept a Assistant Professor of Library Science position at Purdue University Libraries. She will work with their data management and curation services. Her last day is December 21st.

Since Lisa’s arrival in Summer 2010, she provided reference, instruction and collection development for the business and entrepreneurship programs and helped organize library events. She had also started exploring data management services for the Lakeland campus.

We wish her the best with her new job!

Wade Lorenz presents at Society of Georgia Archivists conference

Sonia Wade Lorenz, Library Assistant at the USF in Lakeland Library and USF SI graduate, recently presented a poster at the Society of Georgia Archivists annual conference in St. Simons Island.

Her poster is entitled “Before Photoshop” and explored photograph editing throughout history. Wade Lorenz also volunteers at the McKay Archives Center of Florida Southern College and her exploration of the topic started there with her work on the Florida Citrus Photographs Collection.

Writing tutor at the Library

Starting today, Floydd Elliot is our new writing tutor.

Floydd Elliott received a MFA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces. He has experience both as a English Instructor and a writing tutor.

Floydd will assist students with reviewing papers, brainstorming ideas, and making suggestions for improvements. He will meet with students on a walk-in basis but will be able to schedule appointments during the following hours. His email address is mre@usf.edu.

Wednesday: 5:00pm to 8:00pm
Thursday: 1:00pm to 4:30pm

He will be located in the group study area of the Library, in LTB 1115.

Open Access Week events

The Tampa Library is hosting events for the 2012 National Open Access Week, October 22-28. There were many efforts around the University of South Florida that support and contribute to this OA movement, including participation from USF in Lakeland Faculty and Staff.
